Take the Alps Away

Literaturhaus Basel

‘Take the Alps Away’ tells the story of a childhood in Switzerland in pictures. There is the nameless brother and sister duo, speaking in chorus. There is being at home with Mum and Dad, whose four arms give them the appearance of a deity. There is the speed of the bike the children ride to get to their games. And there is the new child arrives in class and opens the way for the siblings to find a way out of their own, inner mountains. ‘We don’t want to ever stop reading: these Alps, how lucky literature is to have them.’ (Julia Franck)

With musical intervention by Legion Seven and Elfrid the Third
