CAROLIN EMCKE

What is true. About violence and climate

Literaturhaus Basel

How can we talk about violence? How can we recount experiences that disregard all moral expectations about what people can do to each other? For Emcke the search for truth always also involves questioning our own role. Whoever thinks about violence and the way it destroys people also needs to talk about the violence of the climate crisis. One thing is clear for Emcke: In the face of the climate crisis, the search for truth must extend in different directions. Backwards: What happened and who is responsible for it? But forwards too: The search needs to open up possibilities and chart new paths. “What is True” is a plea for the ethics of storytelling and thinking in utopias.
