Double Life (Doppelleben)

Literaturhaus Basel

The brothers Jules and Edmond de Goncourt lived as twins, sharing everything: house, thoughts, work, and mistress. Together they went to meet Flaubert, Zola and other artists, to the palace of the Emperor’s cousin, to exhibitions and on social visits. Afterwards, in the secret diaries they kept together, they gossiped about everyone they had met. Nothing seemed to escape their gaze – except the life of their housekeeper Rose, who unnoticed by the brothers lurches from one existential crisis to the other, turns into a drunk, and deceives and steals from her employers without them noticing.
