SECOND THOUGHTS ON KAMEL DAOUDS "HURIS"
Female Voices in the Discussion of Violence
The discussion will be held in English.
Taking as its point of departure Kamel Daoud’s award-winning novel Huris, in which the author gives voice to a young Algerian woman silenced by Islamists, the discussion turns to the role of female voices in narratives of war and violence. Nadia Makhlouf has devoted a major film and photography project to the women fighters of the Algerian War of Independence, who were crucial to the country’s liberation yet have since been largely forgotten. Véronique Tadjo took part in the collective writing project “Écrire par devoir de mémoire – Against Forgetting” (Writing as a Duty Against Forgetting) in Rwanda, where she spoke with numerous survivors of the 1994 genocide.
The series of discussions “Second Thoughts – The World Cannot Stay as It Is Becoming” is curated by Ivna Žic, Henri-Michel Yéré, and Ralph Tharayil.
