Role models and class issues
With Amira Ghenim & Deena Mohamed
Amira Ghenim's novel "Le désastre de la maison des notables" reflects more than fifty years of Tunisian history – from the struggle for independence to the 2011 revolution and the women's struggle. Zbeida Rassaa, the young wife of Mohsen Naifer, is suspected of having an affair with an intellectual from a humble background. In a web of secrets and memories, several members of these two prominent bourgeois families (the strict and conservative Naifers and the liberal and progressive Rassaas) as well as their servants look back on the devastating effects of this evening.
The discussion will be held in French with a German translation.
In Deena Mohamed's brilliant graphic novel debut "Shubeik Lubeik", wishes are literally for sale, but only the more expensive ones work as intended. At a kiosk in Cairo, three people buy wishes. Aziza is fighting against unreasonable regulations and for the right to have a wish at all. Nour, a privileged student, doesn't know whether she wants to use her wish to ‘cure’ her secret depression. And Shokry struggles with his religious beliefs when he helps a friend who doesn't want to make use of his wish.
The discussion will be held in English.
