Thunder Rolls in from the North

Literaturhaus Basel

This event will be held in German.

Nineteen-year-old Jannes lives with his parents and grandfather on their family farm, carrying on the family tradition of herding sheep across the Lüneburg heathlands. But unrest is afoot in the area — the wolf has returned. As the attacks on sheep increase, so tensions in the village rise. Far-right nationalist settlers attempt to exploit the situation to their own advantage, and as things escalate and the threat of vigilante justice looms, Jannes, seeks refuge in the solitude of the heath and with his sheep. Together with students from the Department of German at the University of Basel, Markus Thielemann discusses his highly topical anti-heimat novel, which was shortlisted for the 2024 German Book Prize.

In cooperation with theDepartment of German at the University of Basel.

The event was organised as part of the seminar ‘Psycho. Individual and Collective Disturbances in the Latest Contemporary Literature’ at the University of Basel.
