Kamel Daoud: «Huris»
Culturescapes 2025 Sahara – Pre-Event
The discussion will be held in French with a German translation.
«Huris» tells the story of the Algerian Civil War, etched into the body of its narrator, Aube. At the age of five, she survived a brutal massacre in which Islamist militants tried to slit her throat. She lived, but with a scar and a silence that has lasted ever since. Now, through writing this novel, Aube finally finds her voice. She writes to her unborn daughter, Huri, telling both her personal story and the untold history of her country. But as she tries to speak, she is silenced again — this time by state laws that forbid any public remembrance of the civil war. Her secret pregnancy, confronts the young Algerian with questions about the terrors of the past and the bleakness of the future. Aube returns to her childhood village, the place where everything began, to search for answers, and for hope. «A text as fragile as it is brave and important.» (Radio France)
