Summer Shadows

Literaturhaus Basel

This event will be held in German.

On his way back to the Black Forest, the narrator receives a life-altering phone call: a serious diving accident has left his partner in an induced coma. No one can say if she will ever wake up. In the days that follow, he clings anxiously to the hope she will survive. Hanging on to shared memories, he talks to her, willing her to return. His storytelling becomes a form of self-defence — a way to resist the fear of losing her forever. In Sommerschatten (Summer Shadows) Urs Faes explores a profound existential crisis, just as he did in “Halt auf Verlangen” (Stop on Demand), which portrayed the way the protagonist dealt with his cancer diagnosis.
“Urs Faes’ writing is at its most powerful and beautiful when it pushes back against uncertainty, against fear, and all the unpredictability that illness brings with it.” (Bayern 2 on “Halt auf Verlangen”)
